10 Facts You Didn’t Know About The Weeknd

Like many musicians today, The Weeknd got his start in 201o as a youtube sensation before being picked up by a recording company.  With his sudden and recent rise in the musical world and his secretive personality, there’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this R&B singer.

For example…


1. His real name is Abel Tesfaye

Known on youtube and among his fans simply as “The Weeknd”, the fact that we know his real name now sheds some light on the mysterious R&B singer.


2. He is only 22 years old.

The Weeknd was born on February 16, 1990 in Ontario.  His critically acclaimed album House of Balloons was released when he was a mere 21 years old.


3. He has his own record label

It’s called XO and it produces all of his records along with Republic.


4. He is of Ethiopian descent

In his music video for The Knowing, he pays tribute to his heritage.


5. He is friends with Drake

Drake

Fellow Canadian, Drake, first helped bring attention to The Weeknd by tweeting lines from The Weeknd’s Wicked Games.  The Weeknd also stood up against Common after he dissed Drake in the song Stay Schemin.


6. His first performance was at The Mod Club

His performance lasted an hour and a half and created a lot of hype around this unknown artist.


7. His music was featured in Entourage.

8. He only communicates with the press via twitter.

Part of The Weeknd’s appeal is his mystique.  Until recently, it was difficult to even find pictures of the artist.  As of now, The Weeknd refuses any interviews with media and communicates solely through twitter.


9. He apologized to his fans for signing with a major.

10. He was nominated for the Sound of 2013 poll.

If you don’t know, the BBC’s Sound of 2013 Poll is created to find the industry’s most promising talent.  People like 50 Cent and Adele have won in the past.  The Weeknd’s nomination is huge step in his career, and the winner will be announced officially on January 4th.
