US, Mexico Leaders Go Tough on Illegal Immigration

The United States and Mexico’s shared border are infamous for illegal immigration. While the reasons for illegal migration differ, leaders must work assiduously to curb this illegality. Thus, Mexico and the United States are fine-tuning plans to clamp down on their shared entry point. The two countries’ leaders avowed in the second quarter of the year to disrupt irregular crossings, which had recently reached an all-time high.

In a phone conversation, US President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador assured their governments would soon do all within their power to decrease illegal immigration. More impressively, they promised to address the underlying issues—the security and economic challenges fueling illegal migration.

Quick Intervention for the Impasse

In a joint statement, the two leaders revealed that their national security teams will collaborate in the short term to execute significant measures to substantially minimize irregular migration without violating human rights.

Biden seeks another term in office in the November 5 elections, and immigration is one of the most prominent concerns among voting-age Americans. Hence, it is unsurprising that he has recently needed to toughen his approach to border matters.

Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have criticized Biden for easing the Trump-administration border initiatives and disregarding the ever-rising level of irregular crossings.

The White House’s Proposed Plans

The Biden-led government is considering using its executive powers to stop immigrants at the border. However, such a move could cause a legal impasse and resistance from some Democrats.

The government is also considering ways to offer tentative legal status to irregular migrants who married US citizens. They believe this initiative is a political counterbalance to their border restriction plans.

In the first quarter of the year, President Biden endorsed a bipartisan Senate bill that would empower him to deny migrants entry at the US-Mexico border. However, Republicans rejected the initiative after Donald Trump publicly opposed it. After the opposition, the government said that though it still supported the bill, it needed to explore its options.

The Solutions from Mexico’s End

Lopez Obrador revealed after meeting with Biden that he had given his word about keeping the countries’ borders open to legal migrants. He, however, frowned at irregular crossings.

The United States Border Patrol recorded an all-time high of 250,000 arrests in December 2023. However, the numbers have dropped substantially since the beginning of the year. For instance, there were just 137,000 arrests of irregular migrants in March.

According to the Mexican President, the reduced arrivals were due to the social programs his country had implemented in other Latin American countries, where most irregular immigrants were from. He believes increased investment in these social programs would further reduce the numbers.

Furthermore, US and Mexican officials agreed that heightened enforcement from the latter has contributed to the decrease in illegal migration.

“With the constant evolution of U.S. immigration laws, it’s crucial to have legal guidance. An immigration attorney can provide valuable assistance to individuals, couples, and families in helping them navigate the complexities of the legal process and ensuring compliance with the latest requirements for immigration and citizenship,” says immigration lawyer Zaira Solano of the Solano Immigration Law Firm.
