A group of eleven and twelve-year-old kids from Bushwick, Brooklyn are proving once again that talent and age don’t necessarily correlate. NYC’s newest metal band, Unlocking the Truth, are only in the 6th grade, but are quickly working their way around the city.
The two original members, Malcolm Brickhouse (electric guitar) and Jared Dawkins (drums), began playing when they were as young as two and began playing together when they were four. Their first official band, Tears of Blood, was formed in 2007 until they were joined by a bassist, Alec Atkins. Under the new name Unlocking the Truth, the trio have performed at Amateur Nights, Fundraisers, and venues cross the city.

Even when the group isn’t tearing it up on the streets of New York, they’re making a name and standing up for themselves. They may not have a lot of experience with the world, but that doesn’t stop them from writing about what they know. Brickhouse even says he wrote a song about people’s reaction to the fact that he wears nail polish. And for three pre-teens, they’re quite the inspiration. Negative criticism rolls right off them. “You can hate all you want, but at least you’re talking about me” Dawkins said in an interview with the Village Voice.
