Tupac Shakur: Coming Soon to Broadway?

Tupac Shakur is well-known for his posthumous success, with 7 out of his 11 total albums being released after his death. Now, his posthumous career takes an even stranger turn with his hits set to hit the Broadway stage in the 2013-2014 season.

The show titled Holler If Ya Hear Me is being produced by the late artist’s mother, Afeni Shakur. Though the musical, which is still being workshopped, is set to feature Tupac’s music, Tupac himself will not be a character. According to Afeni Shakur, the musical will be the tale of two childhood friends set in a Midwestern industrial city as they struggle to find a balance between their daily lives and their ambitions.

The production is being directed by Kenny Leon, famous for Fences, The Mountaintop, and his work bringing hip hop artists to Broadway when he worked with Sean Combs during his stint on A Raisin in the Sun. The show will be choreographed by Tony-award winning Wayne Cliento of Wicked and Sweet Charity. The musical currently has no current casting or theater information but hopes to soon find its place on the stages of New York.
