The movie Sparkle starring Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks, Derek Luke, and Mike Epps debuted yesterday in theaters nationwide. The movie which is set in the 1960’s ,during the Motown era in Detroit, tells the story of three talented sisters journey to escape the desolate life of Detroit by signing a recording deal.
Whitney Houston’ skillfully plays the role of Emma the mother of Sparkle (Jordin Sparks), Sister (Carmen Ejogo) and Dolores (Tika Sumpter). I was amazed at how beautiful and healthy Whitney looked during the movie and it’s hard to believe she is no longer with us. Emma was a bible quoting reformed “hot mama” who’s “my way or the highway” approach to parenting tore her family apart. The movie Sparkle is one of those movies that would probably be a better “watch” at home, because it is layered with so many emotions.
Jordin Sparks is really coming into her own as she played a heck of a role in her acting debut. Her role as a shy yet super talented singer/songwriter was a perfect fit for her, and the chemistry she had with her boyfriend/manager Derek Luke was great. Surprisingly, Mike Epps’ character, Satin, will probably be the most memorable role in the movie Sparkle. Epps played the abusive husband of Sparkle’s older sister Sister so convincingly, I left the studio mad at him.
The musical selection during the movie Sparkle was amazing and Jordin Sparks definitely had a strong acting debut, but the most powerful moment during the film was hearing Whitney Houston sing the classic gospel song “His Eye Is On the Sparrow.” Whitney Houston was one of the few singers, who had the ability to just stand in the middle of stage without dancing and bring people to tears. As I left the studio, I began thinking this was our last “One Moment In Time.”Google+
