Paying respect to a legend in the music industry this week, I would like to spot light Rick Rubin. Rick Rubin has pretty much had the golden touch over the years. He’s been a part of dozens of successful albums in several genres. He’s one of the co-founders of the record label that made hip-hop a household name, Def Jam. He has since been instrumental in the careers of artists like LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Dixie Chicks and many more. The Time named him one of the most influential people in the world. MTV named him the most important producer in the last 20 years.
Here is a list of seven classic moments in music history that Rick Rubin has blessed us with.
1. I Need a Beat
The LL Cool J song was the first Record ever released from the Def Jam music group in 1984. This label was the first all hip-hop mainstream label. Rick founded the company with partner Russell Simmons while still attending college.
2. The Beastie Boys
The Beastie Boys weren’t always rappers. This was Rick Rubin’s first creation from the ground up. The Beastie Boys were a punk band that Rick found and talked them out of their dream. Something you may not of known, there was originally four members of the Beastie Boys. A girl named Kate Schellenbach. That’s right I said a girl. She was the drummer and with the Beastie Boys going hip-hop there was no need for her to stick around. Don’t feel bad for Kate though, she made well for herself. She continued to drum for several bands and is now a producer on The Ellen Degeneres Show. The Beastie Boys became hip-hop icons and played a big part in bringing hip-hop to the masses.
3. Walk This Way
Rick Rubin credits Sue Cummings of Spin Magazine for sparking the idea for the collaboration of Run DMC and Aerosmith. Rick produced the song and the rest is history.
4. Blood Sugar Sex Magic.
This classic album from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was the second after their debut Mother’s Milk. Mother’s Milk had minimal success, but the group did not claim their place in Rock n Roll history until they went to work with Rick Rubin. The album went platinum 7x in the US and 21x worldwide. They’ve been staples in the biz ever since.
5. Johnny Cash
Rick Rubin left Def Jam after creative differences with Russell Simmons. He started his own label American Recording. His first sign was Johnny Cash. Rubin and Cash worked together on Johnny Cash’s final six albums from 1994 to 2002. Cash died in 2003.
6. Not Ready To Make Nice
After voicing their opinions about the War and then president George Bush, Country music had completely denounced the Dixie Chicks from the genre. Country music is known as a patriotic and truly pro-American form of music and fans were not happy about this rebellion. The all girl band received death threats and one point had to consider shutting down their tour for their safety. So who do you go to bring you back from the dead when the label is scared to approach the situation? You bring in Rick Rubin and sell 4.5 million albums in the face of adversity. That’s a heck of a lot of albums for country album. “Not Ready to Make Nice” is the lead single from the band’s seventh studio album Taken the Long Way. It was the response to the bands oppressors and critics. Rick Rubin won producer of the year at the Grammys for his work on the album.
7. System Of a Down
You have to know that Rick Rubin is the man. System of a Down was a metal band that has had success. Before breaking up and going their separate ways they had a taste of the good life. They hooked up with producer Rick Rubin to release two separate albums, Mesmerize and Hypnotize in the same year. They sold more than 15 million albums world-wide in 2005, which is unheard of for a metal band during this period unless your Metallica, which oh yea Rick worked with them too. System of Down joined the likes of rapper DMX in being one of the few that can say they had two albums debut on the billboard chart at number one in the same year.
I could go on and on about Rick Rubin. My personal favorite is Jay-Z’s 99 problems, but the truth is, I could do top 100 lists on Rick’s accomplishments. I just want you to be aware. Rick Rubin is a legend. As always join the conversation and share some of your favorite moments in Rick Rubin’s long career of saving the day in the music industry.
Music genres are a confusing matter. Especially in the modern music industry, lines between genres are perpetually blurred. Is Taylor Swift country or is she pop? Is this new Alicia Keys’ song considered R&B, or does it start to flirt with that hybrid genre of pop-soul? Either way, it has become clear that genres aren’t as simple as they once were.
And who can we thank for this blurring of genre lines? The Beastie Boys, for one. The Beastie Boys weren’t the most prolific music group to ever make their mark on the industry, only releasing seven albums over the course of 25 years, but their determination to rewrite the rules of music can still be heard on the radio every day.
So, what do you need to know about the Beastie Boys? For most of their career, they existed as a trio of MCs: MCA, Mike D, and Ad-Rock. But that wasn’t how they began. In 1981, the Beastie Boys made their first appearance as a four man hardcore punk band, not quite they style of music they’re known for. In 1984, they launched their hip-hop career by releasing twelve singles and changing the hip-hop industry for good.
MCA’s love for hardcore punk led to a discovery that rock music and hip-hop could exist harmoniously, as well as other genres they discovered when they began to incorporate jazz into their music. The Beastie Boys held onto the old hip-hop sound as the rest of the music world began to conform to the pop style of the radio. Their music did more than trailblaze the way for rising artists; it preserved the sound that was being left behind as the times changed.
So, his week, put down that Kanye album and pause that Cee Lo Green track. Listen to some Beastie Boys for a bit, after all, they helped inspire some of our greatest musical artists to date.
Here is a new video from Dallas rapper/producer J. Rhodes featuring Knes.
“Beastie Boys” is a pretty dope track dedicated to the legendary MCA of the Beastie Boys.
Here is an epic short comedy produced by Adam Yauch AKA MCA. The script is based on the Beastie Boys’ classic party anthem ‘Fight For Your Right’ and stars Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen and Danny McBride.
This week was another stellar week for the team at SoSoActive. Traffic is steady increasing and I had a really great interview yesterday with Anthony Fantano from The Needle Drop – stay tuned for the post next week.
However sweet things were, this week did end on a somber note with the passing of Adam Yauch AKA MCA from the legendary Hip-Hop group, Beastie Boys. A great loss and he will be missed. Without further ado here are the top 10 music related stories from the last 5 days.
