Yesterday, I had the pleasure to attend the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Music Festival at the Gexa Pavilion in South Dallas. Although I’m not the biggest fan of heavy metal music I had a blast and got a chance to meet some really cool people. The first hour or so was spent going back and forth with the security guards over which entrance the press was supposed to use. After several miles of walking and whole lot of perspiration, I finally made it in and immediately sat down to interview Mike Hranica and Andy Trick from ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’
After that, I was able to run to the Eastside of the Pavilion and catch tail end of AS I Lay Dying set, but unfortunately I didn’t get any up close pictures. The weather had to be at least 105 degrees and when I say the heavy metal crowd is extremely dedicated, that is an understatement. I mean the Pavilion was jam packed at 3:00 pm on a Tuesday afternoon, and when most of the free world is working – they are out partying.
The Mayhem Festival is a full blown experience with a side show, tons of exhibitors and bike stunts from the Rock Star Energy team. One of the highlights of the festival was seeing Anthrax and Motorhead rock out like a bunch of 19 years olds who just signed their first record deal. I must have stuck out like sore thumb, because this dude dressed in Confederate clothing asked me “What the hell are you doing here around all these racist ass white people. Do you really like the music or are you just fucking with us. ““I told him that I was with the press, and then the “toothless wonder” started posing for a picture…
I was also able to get interviews with ‘As I Lay Dying’ and Dirtfedd, a free chicken tender meal from a random guy, and I damn near overdosed on the unlimited amount of RockStar Energy Drinks available in the press area. I met a guy with “Mayhem 2004″ tattooed on his arm and he told me it was his brother’s name and that he had been killed at the fatal Dimebag Darrel concert. RTP….Google+
