Pharrell has been on a roll with the success of G I R L especially with the smash hit single, Happy. If he wasn’t a household name before that then he certainly is now. He’s considered to be the greatest producer of this generation as well as one of the best performers on this generation. He can sing, produce, rap, and even score a film. For those who don’t know much about the film industry, scoring is essentially composing, or making music, that works tonally with the nature of the film or for certain scenes or segments. Pharrell has even helped with the score/soundtrack to one of the biggest films of the year, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The film’s biggest name in the music department isn’t Pharrell it’s Hans Zimmer. Hans has been huge name in the film industry for a long time due to his energetic and notable works on films like Inception, The Dark Knight, and 12 Years a Slave. His work doesn’t stop at composing the score for motion pictures; he’s known for putting his stamp on the video game industry with high level production for games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Crysis 2. If you hear the Inception ‘dun’ in trailers, you can thank Hans Zimmer for that.
Pharrell has been working in the music industry since he was straight out of high school in the early 1990s. Since then he has proven that he is a multifaceted entity in the business with his ability to write lyrics, compose music, sing, rap, and produce for artists from rap to pop. His most recent claim to becoming a household name, besides Get Lucky and Blurred Lines, is composing the music in Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2.
With the first Despicable Me, Pharrell composed the films music along with Heitor Pereira. The music for that film was fantastic even though it didn’t receive much fanfare. Fun, Fun, Fun and Rocket’s Theme are great songs but they didn’t really catch on with audiences. He was able to work with Hans Zimmer on film with Zimmer taking on the role of score producer. Because of his work on the film, he was brought back to work on the sequel, Despicable Me 2. Here is where Pharrell garnered so much success. The song Happy blew up the charts in the US and was even nominated for an Academy Award for best song.
We’ve heard about musicians crossing over from making music for their audience to making music for film audiences. Jay Z was even hired to do the music for The Great Gatsby. How did Pharrell end up working on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 making music? The answer lies with Hans Zimmer.
There are a number of artists working on the film’s music including Johnny Marr, Dave Stewart, and Mike Einziger. These are all musicians whom, in some form or another, has worked with Hans Zimmer in the past. Marr worked with Hans on Inception, Stewart on the third Madagascar film, and Einziger on The Lone Ranger Film. The culmination of all of these artists brings a unique sound that’s required for a Spider-Man film.
Pharrell just plays a small part in the scoring of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but it’s a fantastic career move since the height of his breakthrough performances. I wonder what Pharrell has in store for his fans next.
