Most fans are fickle and they will change their opinion of you and your music in the drop of a dime. Two of the biggest hip-hop artists in the world, Nicki Minaj and B.O.B have their Sophomore projects in motion..
The first singles that I heard from both Nicki and B.O.B. thus far, had them returning to more of a street sound. Nicki’s Beez in The Trap feat 2Chainz is currently in heavy rotation on Urban Radio and B.O.B. last single Strange Cloud feat Lil Wayne was a bit of a dud in comparison two his previous efforts. B.O.B. is a very diverse artist and can get on a track with any artist in the world but he found his lane as did Flo-Rida by crafting pop hits.
Nicki Minaj comes from the hood, but found her lane by making pop music for her legion of “Barbie” fans – which is the reason she will have to continue to riding the same horse that got her to the show. Many artists have crossed over and tried to go back to their street roots on their next album – and it proved to be a career altering move.
Houston rapper Chamillionaire’s first album was double platinum and he even won a Grammy for the single Ridin Dirty. On his Sophomore, he tried to make a more conscious Hip-Hop album and he has been out of the spotlight since…
I remember when PitBull first started, he was a hardcore rapper jumping on sofas with Lil Jon – now he’ rocking cocaine white suits doing songs with J.Lo. He found his lane and from the looks of it he’s not changing…
I’m saying all of this to say once you create a lane for yourself and pick up steam you have to keep creating music of the same vein.
The most successful musicians make the same songs over and over again.
Once you pop you can’t stop….
