Olly Murs “Right Place Right Time Album” Review

Olly Murs didn’t come out on top when he participated in the sixth season of the X Factor.  His third studio album Right Place Right Time, however, proves that he didn’t need to take home the prize to emerge as a talented and popular musician.

If you’re not listening closely, the title track “Army of Two” could easily be mistaken for Adam Levine’s sensual vocals.  Much like Maroon 5’s tracks, the song is catchy and big.  Murs makes sure to attach his own twist to the song though as it’s a quasi-love story between himself and his fans, a fact which is endearingly cheesy.

Troublemaker” is Olly Murs’ first single from this album and will have you singing along before you even realized you knew the lyrics.  It’s delightfully infectious and after one quick listen, there’s no surprise it shot to number 1 on the UK’s charts.  But despite these two fun songs, Right Place Right Time has about just as many ballads as it does pop hits.  “Loud & Clear” showcases Olly’s big, powerful voice in this ballad that make up for his usually less than sentimental lyrics.  In this track, however, he manages to do both.  “If you want love, you’ve got to give love or else it’ll disappear.” he croons.

While some of his songs harken to other performers, “Right Place Right Time” resembles Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You” and he pulls out his inner One Direction with the song “Hey You Beautiful”, Olly Murs has released a stellar third album.  If this is just a glimpse at what he’s capable of, then I’m excited to see just how far he will go.
