Top 9 Take On Rock Melody
American Idol’s Top 9 opened Wednesday night’s show with a rock melody consisting of Rolling Stones, Cold Play, and Fall Out Boys hits. The band drowned out most of contestants, but performance was full of energy and excitement. This week the band joined each contestant on stage.
Alex Sucks The Energy Out of No Doubt Song
Every week Alex Preston brings a chill vibe to his performance. This week it wasn’t enough to wow the judges with his rendition of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.” Alex’s performance was soft and mellow while No Doubt’s version is very raw and powerful. Keith Urban wanted more edge in the Alex’s vocal delivery while Jennifer Lopez said he “sucked the energy out of the song.” Harry Connick Jr. would like to see him physically move around the stage.
Majesty Rose Breaks Out Of Her Shell
Majesty Rose sang Florence and the Machine’s “Shake it Out.” She had the crowd up and dancing. Though her performance was good, Majesty’s vocals were what Jennifer Lopez says, “all over the place.” Harry thought she was close to owning the stage and liked the performance.
Dexter’s Performance Gets Out Shined By a Gummy Bear
Dexter Roberts took on “Boondocks” by Little Big Town.” Keith gave Harry a giant grape Gummy Bear in which created a huge interruption to the judges’ critique. All judges lost focus of Dexter as Harry and Jennifer both took bites. All three agreed Dexter needs to show another side since all the songs he picks are generic and he needs to find a way to make a song his own.
Malaya Watson Sings Beatles’ Classic
“Gosh that was Beautiful Baby,” were the first word spoken by Keith Urban. Malaya’s performed “The Long and Winding Road.” It was a wowing and powerful rendition of The Beatles’ classic. Jennifer thought Malaya sounded like a “young Michael Jackson.”
Sam Woolf Strips Down “Hey There Delilah”
Judges loved Sam Woolf’s choice in stripping down the arrangement. Harry thought it “was very smart” and most comfortable he’s seen him all season. Sam failed to connect to the audience. Jennifer wanted to know if there was a Delilah he was even singing to. By visualizing someone or picking someone in the audience could have helped.
Jessica Meuse Changes Things Up
Jessica Meuse went without her guitar while performing Fleetwood Mac’s “Rahiannon.” Both Harry and Jennifer saw Jessica had more confidence and was connecting with the audience more. This is a side to Jessica the audience hasn’t seen before. Her Stevie Nicks style resemblance was even more present Thursday Night.
JLo Gets Brutally Honest with C.J. Harris
Jennifer Lopez started nice, but it soon went sour. Each judge thought C.J.’s version of “If It Hadn’t Been For Love” was a good song choice. Jennifer said C.J. “started off good, in the middle went off, and came back at the end.” She didn’t know when he was on the melody or off the melody because she wasn’t familiar with the song. Harry suggested for C.J. to work on his pitch.
Caleb Johnson Goes “Dazed and Confused”
Caleb Johnson did an amazing job with a Led Zeppelin classic. Keith and Jennifer gave him a standing ovation. Jennifer said, “the performance itself was sexy.” Caleb led the band in which took it to another level. Harry said the band and Caleb were going head to head and it was great.
Jena Irene Brings It Home
After a phenomenal performance by Caleb judges was worried if Jena could back it up. She did just that with “Bring Me To Life” by Evanesce. All the judges applauded her efforts and thought she did a great job. Jennifer said she loved the performance, but “wanted it to be more messy” with hair flipping.
