We’ve heard news of biopics in the past, especially with Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury. This week, we’ve heard news about the casting of Elton John in the movie produced by him. Actor Tom Hardy is set to play the singer. Hardy is the face (and voice) behind last year’s The Dark Knight Rises’ Bane.
The actor has been in countless films in the past few years including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, This Means War, Inception, Lawless, Warrior, and next year’s Mad Max sequel/reboot. Elton John expressed his thoughts about the casting before; “Justin [Timberlake] is taking it very seriously,” said a source close to John back in January of last year.
While Justin does (oddly) have the Elton John look, I don’t he has the acting ability to pull off the subject matter in the movie. Entitled Rocketman, the story deals with John’s alcoholism in the 90s and his stint in rehab; basically the movie begins with John entering rehab and ends with him leaving rehab. Sorry for not disclosing those SPOILERS! tag.
Hardy, while known for machismo in recent blockbusters, he’s a great actor with a lot range. Watch Warrior, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Lawless, and Bronson to get a clearer look at it. The latter, Bronson, may be a hard watch for some; it’s weird.
