WARNING: If you ever feel the need to venture into the movie theater with the intention of watching a children’s movie, i.e. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, I suggest—no, no, highly encourage—you to not go alone. Bring a kid with you, preferably your own, or anyone capable of sitting in a theater for two hours. Otherwise you will walk into a vortex of judging eyes and suspicious glances, as if you have a neon sign blinking “creeper” above your head. Needless to say, I sat in plain sight with my notebook out on display for all to see.
Hard times are not over for the people of Swallow Falls—or at least not for Flint Lockwood, a young inventor whose creations tend to take a wrong turn. The people of Swallow Falls are relocated when Chester V, Flint’s childhood hero, arrives on scene with his company Live Corp to help clean up the food that had rained down from the sky. Chester V offers Flint a dream job of working as an inventor at Live Corp. Flint tries to prove himself as an inventor, but fails miserably. However, he is forced to go back to Swallow Falls when the people of Live Corp discover that the FLDSMDFR (The Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator) has turned the food into foodimals (food+animals=foodimals). Against the wishes of Chester V, Flint brings his friends along on the mission: his dad Tim, Sam Sparks, Brent, Steve, Earl, and Manny. It is up to them to find the FLDSMDFR and destroy it before the foodimals learn to swim and “attack Lady Liberty!”
The colors and foodimals will capture your little guy’s attention, inevitably causing them to beg for their own watermelephant. (Yes, an elephant that is a watermelon.) Though the morals are typical, it is a fun movie that the whole family will enjoy. Food puns are abundant, but what do you expect from a movie all about food? The creators let their imaginations run wild while coming up with the foodimals: tacodile, flamangoes, shrimpanzees, hippotatomus (a baked potato hippo), and a cheespider that is a giant cheeseburger with french fry legs and sesame seed eyes. The one character that took the cake (sorry, I had to) for me was Barry, a strawberry with the biggest eyes you’ve ever seen. He will tug at your heart and make you never look at a strawberry the same way ever again. The best scene of the whole movie is when Flint is rallying the foodimals and Barry is behind him, translating the entire time in his little voice. If there was ever a reason to watch this movie, it is Barry.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is a fun, wacky, colorful adventure for the entire family. Beware of the cheespider and tacodile, for they could be a bit frightening for a much younger crowd. Don’t go into this movie without some sort of snack: Cloudy captures your heart, but also your stomach. Your kids will thank you for taking them to see this movie, but just be prepared to replicate all foodimals at every mealtime for at least a month.
