Hollywood may be a beautiful place filled with even more beautiful people, and the life of fame may seem glamorous, but not everything about being a celebrity is perfect. It seems as though we cannot go a year without someone famous dying from some sort of substance abuse. I, for one, would never be able to handle being “famous”—constantly being scrutinized for every move I make, thing I say, or outfit I wear. I would just not be able to handle it as graciously as some people are able to do. You better believe I’d be on the “worst dressed” list because I am not opposed to going out in public in sweatpants. Not even sorry about it.
You need a tough skin to make it in show business. The world is full of incredibly talented people, but sometimes these people are pushed to the edge and do drastic things to deal with their lives. Drugs and alcohol are abundant, and I’m curious as to why it seems like everyone is turning a blind eye? Sure, once someone has overdosed, everyone and their mother are on television preaching about how you shouldn’t do drugs, but is anyone doing anything about it? I feel as though some people in the movie and music industries pretend like they don’t see the problems in certain people—the drug or alcohol abuse—because they want to get the album finished or the movie wrapped. I’ll get off my soapbox in a second, but I believe wholeheartedly that if people would just speak up, care about the human beings more than the product they create, then the amount of deaths would not be quite as frequent. Sure, we can only do so much to help, but keeping silent is never the answer.
Now that I’ve stepped off my soapbox, here are a few incredibly talented individuals that were taken from us far too soon:
1. Philip Seymour Hoffman
An incredibly talented man, he left behind his family when he passed away due to a suspected drug overdose. The movie industry has lost one of its best.
2. Cory Monteith
My heart hurts for his girlfriend and co-star, Lea Michele. He passed away in a hotel room from combined drug intoxication. I get so sad every time I hear a song that he sang on Glee.
3. Heath Ledger
Seriously, what an amazing actor. His death was accidental, caused by a deadly combination of prescription drugs. Had he known the dangers of taking so many pills, he would still be here today.
4. Amy Winehouse
The evidence of her downward spiral was apparent for awhile, but sadly she passed away from alcohol.
5. Chris Farley
The comedy world has been a little less funny since he passed away from a drug overdose.Google+
