Black Hippy is upset and rightfully so. If you haven’t seen the XXL magazine cover this month, they are the cover feature. Black Hippy is made up of four rappers: Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Kendrick Lamar. However, XXL ‘disrespected’ Black Hippy with the title, “Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy.”
Member Ab-Soul tweeted out, “If y’all keep printing “Kendrick Lamar and Black Hippy” I will remove myself from the group. Thanks.” So why is Ab-Soul so upset? It’s quite simple: there isn’t a frontman for Black Hippy, it’s just Black Hippy. Schoolboy Q gave his assessment on the whole situation by speaking with MTV news. He did say that XXL was disrespectful but he understood totally why they wrote in such a way. “Kendrick is way ahead of us,” he told MTV News. Yes, Kendrick is working his way onto becoming a household name and he’s bringing Black Hippy with him.

Schoolboy Q also acknowledged that he, and the rest of the Black Hippy group, will be shadowed by Kendrick’s major success. “If Big Sean gets an interview, they’re going always ask him about Kanye, J. Cole they’re always going ask him about Jay Z, Slaughterhouse they’re going always ask about Eminem.” He continued with saying that Kanye had to break out and become his own person (working his ass off) to become independent.
Jay Rock also gave his opinion to MTV News. “At the end of the day, we’re all family,” said Jay Rock. It doesn’t bother him because, like what Schoolboy Q said, Kendrick, right now, is more successful. However, they did say that if XXL named the photo shoot the ‘Kendrick and Black Hippy photo shoot,’ they wouldn’t have gone through with it. I see it as a way to sell magazines. I also don’t think Ab-Soul is going to depart from Black Hippy, just disassociate himself from the group in public.
What do you think? Was XXL disrespectful with that title?
