We are celebrating the Top R&B artists to look forward to in 2014. Some of these artists may have already made a name for themselves. Some may be arising to fulfill their passions. However, they all have some uniqueness that makes up want to see what more they may have in store for this year. (This list is in no particular order.)
1. Sevyn Streeter
Sevyn Streeter has a combination of eclectic and sultry vocals. With such a great concept to her debut EP “Call Me Crazy, But…” released December 3, 2013. Streeter was in various girls groups before she was signed to Chris Brown’s label CBE.
Check out Sevyn Streeter’s title track “Call Me Crazy” here
2. Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae is no newcomer to the industry. She is 28 now and has always pushed the limits to a new approach to R&B. She released her second studio album Electric Lady on September 10, 2013 and was held to critical acclaim. Monae is finally getting recognized for her greatness as an artist. If “Primetime” sets the bar for her videos, I can’t for her new videos to be released as the year goes on.
3. August Alsina
This young Atlanta artist swept the summer charts with his hot single “I Luv This Sh**” featuring Trinidad James. Could Alsina be the new bad-boy R&B newcomer? The hit song was even picked by the likes of Chris Brown and Trey Songz for a smash remix.
4. Jhene Aiko
Jhene Aiko took everyone by storm with her self-released mixtape in 2011, Sailing Soul(s). Ever since then we have waiting for more music from her. Not quite an album, however Aiko released an EP “Sail Out,” on November 12, 2013. I guess this will hold us over until her highly anticipated album rolls around this year.
SZA (pronounced See-Za) has put a new and inviting sound into the R&B realm. Mixing soft sultry vocals and inventive lyrics with electronic sounding production delivers a new sound into music industry. Only after being a singer-songwriter for a matter of 2 years, SZA has drawn the attention of Top Dawg Entertainemnt who instantly signed her to his label Top Dawg Entertainment.

Fast food chains have over taken the world, feeding millions of people everyday. While restaurant chains like McDonalds, Burger King or Popeye’s, may offer tasty foods, they only other thing they may offer is convenience.
Isn’t that the problem with America today? We live in a fast-paced world full of technology, social media, and instant criticism. We want everything to happen immediately, at the drop of a dime. We rely on instant gratification and instant results. If we would just take the time to slow down and prepare ourselves we would be better off. Just like if we would take the time to prepare healthy foods, our bodies would be better off in the long run.
And it’s not just fast foods… All types of junk foods can fall into this category and if consumed excessively, are potentially harmful to your health.
Leading Cause of Disease
Junk foods contains high levels of sodium, sugar, trans fats, and simple carbohydrates, which can lead to many things to go wrong in your body over time. Heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol, liver disease, stroke, Diabetes, arterial plaque build up—these are various illnesses that can be caused just to name a few.
Affects Your Energy Levels
The refined sugar in junk foods causes your pancreas to secrete high spikes in insulin levels to prevent high jumps in your body’s blood sugar level. This is what gives you that “crash” feeling, leaving you sluggish and super fatigued.
Lack of Proper Nutrients
All fast foods and junk foods contain little to no nutrients to maintain the overall health of your body. Your body requires essential nutrients in order to function at its optimal level. Fruits and vegetables contain the vitamins and minerals that the body truly needs.
Short-Term Memory Loss
Studies have shown that diets high in fatty foods are linked to a decline in an individual’s ability for cognitive development, learning and short-term memory retention. Alzheimer’s disease is linked to the regular consumption of junk foods as well.
The new era health trend: Body Wraps! With so many brands, manufacturers and sellers to choose from it is kind of hard to tell what is what. Are body wraps just a passing trend, or are they here to stay for a while? Are they all about the benefits or are they full of cons that you have missed? We are here to give you straight facts!
PRO: Detox Your Body
A good reason why people love body wraps is because they are useful in detoxing your body. When your skin is wrapped tightly with the plastic wrap it causes your skin to sweat along with the oils or other mixtures on your skin. Perspiration or sweat is your body’s natural way of releasing toxins. Also, the formula applied to the skin is designed to flush out your body’s surrounding cells of waste and toxins.
CON: Expensive Treatments
If you get an herbal body wrap at a professional spa, the cost for one treatment can be anywhere from $70.00 to $120 dollars. And it is recommended to get more than one treatment for the best results.
For home application body wrap treatments, treatments may cost anywhere from $60.00 to $110.00 dollars. However, for a monthly recurring charge some companies offer loyal member discounts. So home treatment body wraps like the Ultimate Body Applicator are definitely a more affordable way to pay for a slimmer tummy without surgery.
PRO: Helps You Lose Body Mass
Body wraps have been shown to help customers lose inches in the applied area just after one application. There are many before and after pictures around the Internet showing people who have lost inches in their waist after body wrap treatments. For maximum results it is recommended to use a body wrap treatment every three days.
CON: Doesn’t Help You Lose Fat
When body wraps are applied, they are used in conjunction with an agent that draws out water from the body. So when you are losing weight you are not actually losing fat from your body. What you are losing is water weight from the section that the wrap was applied. The only way to efficiently lose fat is by doing vigorous cardio that gets the blood pumping.
PRO: Results Can Be Permanent
The trouble with some people is that they may not want to put the work and effort into achieving great results. With proper diet, exercise and cardio, you can achieve a sexy and lean body. When using body wraps at the same time, this will help you achieve definition in the muscle tone you have gained.
CON: Short-Term Loss of Inches
When using the body wraps you may experience an initial loss of inches. But if you are not using the wraps in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise you probably won’t see results for very long. Even if you stop using the wraps your body will most likely revert back to its original state.
1. It’s Been Almost a Decade and a Half
The first The Best Man was released nearly 15 years ago. Since its initial release in 1999, director Malcolm D. Lee, cousin of Spike Lee, the producer for The Best Man, has finally got the crew back together again.
2. A Highly Anticipated Box-Office-Chart-Topper!
Since it’s 14-year hiatus for the sequel, The Best Man Holiday has excited and is anticipated by many fans since the release of the original movie.
The 1999 release of The Best Man was made on a low budget of $9 million dollars. When The Best Man hit the box office, its sales nearly quadrupled its budget making over $34 million dollars.
Hopefully the Best Man Holiday does even better.
3. The Original Cast Remains
Get ready to see the entire original cast on screen as the characters you know and love. Even Malcolm D. Lee has decided to write and direct the movie himself just like the 1999 release—so you know it’s going to be good.
We have Taye Diggs as Harper Stewart, Sanaa Lathan as Robin, Nia Long as Jordan Armstrong, Morris Chestnut as Lance Sullivan, Monica Calhoun as Mia Morgan, Harrold Perrineau as Julian Murch, Melissa De Sousa as Shelby, Regina Hall as Candy, and Terrance Howard as Quentin Spivey.
4. The Cast Looks Beyond Amazing!
When the cast took to the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere on November 5, 2013, the Internet frenzy chiming with the phrase “black don’t crack” was resounding! After such a long hiatus the cast still looks nearly the same as when they did in the 1999 release. Check out photos of sizzling Sanaa Lathan and steamy Nia Long!
5. Awesome Christmas Music Soundtrack
In 1999, the soundtrack for The Best Man peaked at number two on the Top Hip-Hop/R&B Album charts and at 16 on the Billboard Top 200.
The all-new Best Man Holiday film soundtrack should do just as good as the first. With the vocals of R&B artists such as Ne-Yo, Monica, R. Kelley, Mario, Marsha Ambrosius, Fantasia, John Legend, and Mary J. Blige, the new holiday themed album is sure to please fans.
6. Feel-Good for Families
Anybody who loves Christmas will love that this movie has a prominent Christmas theme. This would be a perfect movie to see after spending the Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends.
7. Jordan Armstrong is Dating a White Guy
Harper’s past love interest Jordan is dating the hot, successful businessman Brian, played by Eddie Cibrian. He’s handsome, so go head girl!
8. Who is Shelby Dating?
In The Best Man Holiday trailer, Murch’s ex-girlfriend Shelby, played by Melissa De Sousa, seems to be all over the place, romantically. She is consistently flirting with Murch, despite the fact that Murch’s new wife Candy is there, played by Regina Hall.
In the movie’s promotional flyer, Shelby and Terrance Howard’s character Quentin, look as if they are romantically involved still, as they play with a red scarf around each other. And if you remember from the first movie, Shelby and Quentin woke up half-naked in bed together, both screaming!
9. Secrets, Secrets, Secrets…What Are They Hiding?
This story has so many surprises in store for the audience! Right off the jump, Sanaa Lathan’s character Robin is pregnant and even the sex of the baby is a surprise!
In another cut, Mia says to Morris Chestnut’s character Lance, “at some point we have to tell them,” The only response we get to see from Lance is, “in due time.”
Apparently whatever the secret is, Harper knows all about it when his wife Robin says, “wait, did you know about this?”
What is going on? Could Lance and Mia be getting a divorce?
10. Will Best Man Holiday Re-Ignite the Era of the Black Rom-Com-Drama?
There used to be so many great romance/comedy/drama movies featuring a strong black lead, such as Love and Basketball, Soul Food, Love Jones—there are so many.
Maybe this will inspire the likes of more African-American Rom-Com-Dramas to come in the future.
Be sure to see The Best Man Holiday on November 15, 2013!
Often times, when many people hear the word, “yoga,” they often associate it with negative ideas. Yoga is an ancient practice that comes from ancient India and was later brought into the Western world. There are various types of yoga; the most popular type is Hatha yoga. Not only are there a lot of “false-truths” about yoga, there are many benefits. So let’s nix the common misconceptions about this ancient practice:
1. Yoga is only for women; I won’t get a good workout.
FALSE. Yoga is a practice commonly enjoyed by men and women, young and old. If you ever go to a yoga class you will see that there will most likely be both men and women participating. There will never be a sign on the door that says, “no men allowed,” unless of course the class is specialized only for women.
TRUTH = Yoga helps one achieve relaxation while also building strength.
Often times, people think that yoga will not allow them to get a powerful workout. In reality, yoga is a practice of tranquility and strength building. When you hold the yoga postures or asanas, this forces your muscles to build strength in order to hold the pose. Your body also experiences relaxation through the diaphragmatic breathing used in yoga. And of course, by practicing yoga you can achieve an improved breathing capacity.
2. Yoga is not for me; it’s a religious practice.
FALSE. Yoga does not have to be a religious practice. Although it is associated with some religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, you do not have to have those same beliefs to practice yoga.
TRUTH = Yoga is a meditation of the heart and mind.
If performed properly, yoga syncs the motions of the body with diaphragmatic breathing, allowing the mind to focus or meditate and the heart to strengthen. Most of the time, yoga instructors will not push their own beliefs on their class. So if you are spiritual or religious you can implement your own beliefs into your yoga class or just simply enjoy the peaceful meditation.
3. I’m not flexible enough to do yoga.
FALSE. You do not have to be as flexible as an Olympic gymnast to practice yoga. Yes, some poses may require a little more flexibility than others, but the key is to do the best you can for your body.
TRUTH = Yoga improves flexibility and endurance.
If you perform yoga long enough, over time you will see your flexibility improve, as well as your endurance to hold poses stronger and longer.
4. Yoga is not for me; I have Arthritis.
FALSE. Just because you have Arthritis (or any type of other diminutive condition) does not mean you can’t practice yoga. Yes, Arthritis is a very serious condition and should be treated properly.
TRUTH = There are many yoga routines specialized for people with Arthritis.
Yoga should be your own experience to fit your own body. So if you have arthritis in your knee, it is safe to suggest that you don’t perform poses that involve overextending knee joint. However, there are many other alternative moves you can do to take pressure off your problem areas. As yoga helps to strengthen the muscles, it will make your body stronger as a whole. Ask your instructor for more advice if you have a serious condition.
5. I’m not advanced enough to do Yoga.
FALSE. You do not have to be at an advanced level to perform yoga.
TRUTH = Yoga can be performed at any level of intensity.
From the beginning stages to the expert level, yoga is for everyone. The key is to do what feels the best for your body (as mentioned above). If something doesn’t feel right in a particular yoga posture, then you may be doing something wrong or overdoing it. Yoga performed without the proper form can result in injury, so be sure to consult with a professional yoga instructor. And remember: listen to your body; it will tell you if something is not right!

It may not have the best taste, but there other ways to get consume it without drinking it by itself. The truth is: there are dozens of ways you can truly reap the benefits of using Apple Cider Vinegar, or for short, ACV.
Before we get to our list, here are a few things you should know before going to the grocery store to make your purchase.
The best kind of ACV to use is:
Getting right into it—Here are Five Reasons to have ACV in your home!
1. Detoxifies Your Body Naturally
Being that ACV is very nutrient rich in healthy enzymes, vitamins, and minerals, it strongly aids in the complete detoxification of your body overall. It helps to gather toxins in the body more effectively by cleansing the lymph nodes, increasing the effectiveness of the lymphatic system. When your lymphatic system is healthy, this boosts the effectiveness of the immune system. Ultimately helping your body to fight off bacteria that will make you sick. ACV also helps in the detoxification of the liver, improving the way toxins are removed from the body.
2. Natural Home Cleaner
Although the ACV does not have the best smell, when you use it as a cleanser it leaves your house smelling fresh and clean! Not only does ACV have many nutrients, it also has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. Therefore, you can throw out chemical cleaners that cause unseen damage to your body and instead use ACV as a natural cleaner with no harmful chemicals.
Use two-parts water to one-part ACV, an essential oil blend of your choice, with a squeeze of lime or lemon, then shake. Put this mixture into a spray bottle and use it to clean any surface! You can even pour ACV into your toilet bowl overnight for a fresh smelling toilet in the morning.
3. Natural Aid in Beauty
ACV is a great item to add to your everyday beauty regimen! It can be used as skin toner to firm and tone your skin and can even be used as a natural after-shave for men and women.
As you know now, ACV battles bacteria, fungus, and viruses, therefore it can even combat facial acne for clear, shiny skin. It also works great as a hair rinse to cleanse your scalp and seal the moisture in your hair follicles, giving you shiny, lustrous hair.
4. Acts as a Weight-loss Enhancer
ACV has been shown to control your appetite and to help regulate your blood sugar. It helps you to feel fuller longer and control your cravings for unhealthy foods. Also, it helps to ward off high spikes and low drops in your blood sugar caused from simple starches such as table sugar and white flour.
5. Naturally Alleviates Bodily Pains
If consumed by mouth, ACV can cure headaches without you having to take Tylenol or Aspirin. It is even said that ACV can help alleviate pains from Arthritis.
Combine one tablespoon of ACV with eight oz. of water, and use a natural sweetener if you want, such as Stevia or Agave nectar. If you want to take this as a shot, use one to four oz. of water.
Add a few capfuls of ACV to your bathwater to alleviate muscle pains from exercising, standing on your feet for extended periods of time, or body cramps.
Cute and adorable 91-year-old Betty White does the latest spoof on Miley Cyrus’ music video “Wrecking Ball.” With the borderline-melodramatic and sexually driven images from Cyrus, White lightens up the air by putting her own humorous spin on things.
The short clip starts off with White stating that she was inspired by “recent pop culture events that really got the kids talking.” Then BOOM—in she swings on a wrecking ball dressed in a full white track suit and what seems to be Chuck Taylors. Then, she even requests a sledgehammer and an oversized foam-finger.
The former star of the hit NBC 80’s sitcom “Golden Girls” can never go wrong! She even kisses the sledgehammer and playfully waves the foam-finger at the end.
White shows her cheerful personality in this spoof while promoting for her new hidden camera show “Off Their Rockers.” White’s show is airing its third season on the Lifetime network after season’s one and two aired on NBC. “Off Their Rockers,” hosted by Betty White, is a full cast of senior tricksters carrying out pranks, catching the reactions all on cameras.
Keep it up Betty White! We enjoy your innocence and cuteness that you bring to the entertainment world!
