Clair Huxtable, played by Phylicia Rashad in The Cosby Show, was the quintessential TV mom. She did it all—she was a hardworking lawyer, a loving wife, and a doting mother of five. Not only did she literally do it all, but she kept her spunk at the same time. Obviously she was a fictional character and many moms may not be able to do what she did, all while looking fantastic—because let’s face it, any mom that can work, take care of five kids, interact with her significant other, and just go through daily life all while looking flawless is clearly an alien. If you’re a mom that achieves this every day, then please share your secret with us all. But if it involves less sleep, move along, because we don’t want to hear it.
Here are a few things moms can learn from Clair Huxtable when it comes to mommyhood:
1. Encourage your children to become something in the world.
Clair: Theo, we never said become a doctor, become a lawyer, we say go to school, we say study, we say become something.
-Clair in “I’m ‘In’ With the ‘In’ Crowd”
2. When in doubt, confuse your kids.
3. Always make sure your kids know what you’ve done for them. (And that you’re expecting repayment.)
Clair: “But you’ve always wanted to be a lawyer, you’ve talked about nothing else!”
Sondra: “I’ve changed my mind.”
Clair: “CHANGE IT BACK! After all that money we spent sending you to Princeton? Sondra, you owe us 79,648 dollars and 22 cents, and I want my money NOW!”

4. Have fun and be goofy.
5. They came out of your body; you have a say in the outcome of their life.
Cliff: “I don’t understand why it is that you get to rant and rave and I’m the one that has to be calm.”
Clair: “Because, Cliff, that is my baby in there!”
Cliff: “Well, that’s my baby, too!”
Clair: “No, Cliff, you did not have that child. I had that child. I was the one who was lying on that table screaming, “take it out.” And if it takes the last breath in my body, Sondra IS going to become a lawyer!”
