The Rock is in the Building…Chris Rock that is.
This years BET Awards was filled with many surprise performances including Jhene Aiko taking the stage with Grammy Award Winner John Legend to sing her hit “The Worst”, to Trey Songz joining August Alsina to perform their single “I Love This” along with the now husky figured Chris Brown pictured below.
This was the first television appearance of the two (Trey and August Alsina) since Alsina’s blatant display of dislike for the aritist Trey Songz on the show 106 & Park earilier this year.
When host Keisha Chante’ asked the singer if they could bury the hatchet between the two Alsina responded, “So you just had to go against the grain and go against everything that I just…I just told y’all not to ask me that s**t when I got up in here.” Keisha replied that the fans want to know and “If you don’t want to answer it, that’s fine.” Alsina quickly stated, “I won’t”. He then proceeded to promote his album Testimony and teased the audience with his vocal ability.
Missy Elliot was another surprise guest that graced the stage sharing the spotlight with the hottest producer out right now, Pharrell. He performed his latest hit “Come Get it Bae” and was later joined by Missy who performed her 2003 single “Pass That Dutch”.
Chris Rock’s performance as host of the event was stellar as predicted. He kept true to his craft: comedy. Chris Rock entertained the viewers with jokes pertaining to current popular movies, performers of the night, and celebrity attenders and non-attenders, especially Rick Ross. In his introduction, Rock compliments the success of Dr. Dre and states that since Dre has generated so much success behind his headphones called Beats, everyone is trying to come out with headphones from 50 Cent and jokes that Rick Ross is coming out with headphones as well.
He states, “Rick Ross even got headphones. Dre got Beats. Rick Ross has Dia-Beats.” He even went on to say they’re the type of “headphones you put on swollen feet before you chop’em off”. He proceeded with, “Rick Ross is going to be the first rapper to die of breast cancer”.
Although to viewers it appeared to be fun and games, Rick Ross took offense to Rock’s remarks. He didn’t contact him personally to settle his discernment; he handled it like a normal human being in 2014 would. He took it to Twitter.
Ross tweets below.
Say what you want Ross but Chris Rock hosted one of the best BET Awards show in years.
Another shocking performance of the night was the highly anticipated performance from Beyonce and Jay-Z. It was hard to tell if it were a pre-recorded performance or live streamed but needless to say, which ever it was, it wasn’t in high definition. Jay-Z appeared to be at a totally different event based on how zoomed in his footage was. The performance appeared as if it were recorded via VHS and sent in to BET, thus making this the biggest surprise of the night because it was less then expected from the power couple.
Many viewers waited almost four hours to see the hyped up performance to only have to struggle through a low definition presentation.
Of course Instagram memes poured in immediately proceeding the performance.
In this case, the “ROC” was definitely NOT in the building. Luckily Chris Rock’s performance was so entertaining that J and B’s physical presence was not needed to make the BET Awards exceptional this year.
