Reality television is in and appears to be a trend that’s going to stay with us for some time. As the New Year approaches, check out these top ten reality music shows to watch.
1. Sunday Best
Sunday Best is a unique singing competition show in that it deals solely with Gospel music. The show sets out to find the best undiscovered gospel talent in the US. Winners receive a national recording contract, a new car, and a cash prize. The sixth season will feature guest judges CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, and Donnie McClurkin. They began auditions in March, so a new season, though currently unannounced, should air soon. Keep an eye on BET for information on the new season.
2. The X Factor
With the most recent season just finishing up, we may have to wait a bit on the next round of The X Factor, but you can believe it’ll be worth the wait. The X Factor produces star quality talent. The UK version of the X Factor gave us One Direction. The X Factor is seemingly just like the other singing shows, except that auditions are in front of a public audience, meaning that the contestants have to impress the audience as well as the judges. While there’s no date set for the 3rd season, auditions are starting now.
3. The Voice
The Voice is a singing competition show consisting of three phases: a blind audition, a battle period, and live performances. Four noteworthy artists choose team members and train them to compete against the other competitors. The fourth season is scheduled to air on March 25th on NBC but Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will not be returning as mentors. They will be replaced by Usher and Shakira.
4. Braxton Family Values
Though not specifically focused on music, this reality show follows Grammy-award winning artist Toni Braxton and her family. The show is a huge success on WEtv and its 3rd season is set to air in early 2013.
5. Love & Hip Hop: New York
Love & Hip Hop has been described as a docu-soap series. It follows the lives of four women who share a bond through their connection to the hip hop world. The new season will premiere on January 7th and will have a relatively new cast with only a few cast members from previous seasons.
6. Bands of Brothers
While you won’t find this on a TV anytime soon, it’s well worth taking the time to seek it out on youtube. You can watch the previous season here. Bands of Brothers is a a series that takes 12 musical veterans and divides them into three bands to prepare for a concert on Veteran’s Day. All proceeds from the show go to helping soldiers suffering from PTSD. Casting has begun for the new season, meaning a new season will soon be on its way.
7. Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta
Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta is an Atlanta based spin-off of the original Love & Hip Hop. It follows the same premise as the New York based reality show but with a Southern twist. A 2nd season has been confirmed, but there is no word on the air date at this moment.
8. America’s Got Talent
A stem off Britain’s Got Talent, this American version is a talent extravaganza, from singing to dancing to basically anything. Howard Stern has been confirmed as a judge for the next season and auditions will continue until February. A new season should begin sometime in the Fall.
9. American Idol
American Idol has been a competition show staple for nearly a decade. The 12th season, with judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and Randy Jackson, is set to air on January 13th.
10. The Winner Is…
In May, NCB decided to drop a capella inspired competition show, The Sing-Off, in favor of this new series hosted by Nick Lachey. The series will consist of a duel between two singers, established or not, before a panel. The winner will have the option to continue on the show towards a $1 million cash prize or cash out and leave. The show is still in early stages of development, with a working title and casting still in progress, but expect to see it within the year.
