On December 31st 2013, we lost the legendary James Avery AKA Uncle Phil from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. James will forever be remembered as one of the greatest ‘TV Dads’ of all-time. Here are a few facts to celebrate his legacy.
Uncle Phil was ranked ranked #34 in TV Guide‘s “50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time.”
James’ acting debut was in the 1980’s cult classic Blues Brothers.
Joined the Navy during the Vietnam war and participated in the Tet Offensive in the late 1960’s.
Although he was famous for his role as Uncle Phil on the Fresh Prince of Bel-air, James Avery also auditioned for the role of Geoffrey The Butler.
James was diagnosed with Diabetes in 2000.
He played the voice of ‘Shredder’ in the television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
He received a scholarship to attend the University of California at San Diego.
Passed away on December 31st, 2013 after open heart surgery.
James Avery’s final role, will be in a Kickstarter funded movie titled Wish I Was Here.
